Application for Fostering Norcal 700 Possible Pregnant Guinea Pigs
On October 17, 2017 we responded to a plea for help from animal control in a small town in Humboldt County. Once we got to the location we soon realized that this was a massive rescue and we counted 700 guinea pigs total. We came home with all 411 females. We estimate many of those to be pregnant and our conservative estimate is that the total, including the 150 guinea pigs we already were caring for, will get to 1,335 in the next 8 weeks. We are taking applications for foster homes to help us through this major emergency.
Please read these 7 points below before you decide you can commit to fostering.
1) You need to be able to keep the guinea pigs and their offspring for 3 months at least.
2) Be willing and able to provide two cages. One for females and another for male babies that may be born.
3) Be a previous adopter
4) Be willing to provide ringworm care if needed or at the very least a preventative medicated bath if pigs show no sign of the fungus.
5) Be aware that fostering these guinea pigs may be emotionally taxing.
6) Willing and able to transport your fosters to our vet in Thousand Oaks or to our location in Chatsworth if the need arises.
7) Be willing and able to financially provide basic care for bedding, cages, shavings and veggies. This will be considered a donation and upon request we can give you a tax deductible donation receipt. We are a non profit 501c3

Have you adopted from LAGPR previously?
*
Yes I have
No I have not
What pigs (what sex) do you currently own?
*
You will need at the very least 2 extra cages, one for the mama and female babies and one for the weaned boys. Do you have two extra cages or are you willing to buy two extra cages?
*
Will you be able to foster for at least 3 months?
*
A majority of the pigs will need medicated baths- are you able to bathe them weekly? If they need antifungal cream applied twice a day are you able to do that? (We will do our best to make sure that pigs placed in foster homes show little to no signs of ringworm, but all have been exposed)
*
You agree to financially provide basic care for bedding, cages, shavings and veggies. This will be considered a donation and upon request we can give you a tax deductible donation receipt. We are a non profit 501c3
*
I agree
LAGPR will provide veterinary care only through our preferred veterinary clinic. for the foster animals if the need arise. You agree to transport the animals to our vet in Thousand Oaks if the need arises.
*
I agree
Guinea Pig pregnancy can be very risky. Unfortunately sometimes mom and babies do not make it. If the mom passes away, the babies will need to be immediately returned to LAGPR to find a surrogate. Sometimes babies are stillborn and sometimes they can pass away within a few days of being born. This can be emotionally difficult for some people and children to witness. Are you still willing to foster knowing this information?
*
Yes I understand that fostering can be emotionally taxing.
The mom and babies will need to be returned to LAGPR when the babies are 3 weeks old to be properly sexed and placed for adoption (if healthy enough). You will not be able to re-home them yourself. It will be your responsibility to make an appointment and come by at the exact 3 week mark give or take a few days. Will you agree to do this?
*
I agree that it is my responsibility to bring the babies to LAGPR for sexing at 3 weeks.
You are not allowed to re-home them yourself. If you are interested in adopting any of the pigs you fostered, please let Saskia or Julie know. I agree to contact LAGPR when the babies are born.
*
I will not rehome the guinea pigs myself.

*
I agree that only LAGPR will rehome the guinea pigs I will be fostering.
Please attach a picture of your setup for your current guinea pigs..
